Harold Town: Abstraction Figuration

Exhibited artist: Harold Town

This exhibition will feature never-before-seen 1950’s abstractions, the last of their kind in the archive, juxtaposed against the shocking Muscle Paintings of the 1980’s.

Program
Harold Town: Self-Made Wonders with Gary Micheal Dault
Sunday, September 24, 2023
4 p.m.

Duration: 1 hour

Gary Michael Dault discusses Canadian art icon Harold Town, the contentious 1980s Muscle paintings, and the new Christopher Cutts Gallery publication.

Rejected by Toronto’s 1980s art scene, the Muscle paintings were an immediate reflection of the decade’s pop culture influences, taking inspiration from muscle magazines, Pumping Iron, and Frank Zane. This ostentatious series has an almost Instagram-age focus on the body and feels especially relevant today with the 2023 documentary on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Dault will speak about his relationship with Harold Town and the history of these infamous musclemen on Sunday, September 24th at 4 pm. The event will take place at the Christopher Cutts Gallery, 21 Morrow Avenue, Toronto.
